DOUG’S TAKE
———–
– I’ve always thought that the “Pagoda” Mercedes-Benz SL was a beautiful roadster, with elegant styling and excellent build quality – and it’s especially desirable with the 280SL’s potent 6-cylinder engine. This 280SL is a rare “California Coupe” model that combines 2+2 seating with a removable hard top, and it’s finished in gorgeous Labrador Blue. This 280SL has also been previously restored, with some great documentation – so it’s likely been cared for by prior owners. This looks like a fantastic 280SL, and I’m happy to see it here on Cars & Bids.
HIGHLIGHTS
———-
– THIS… is a 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SL, finished in Labrador Blue with a body-colored hardtop and a gray interior.
– This convertible was restored in the late 2000s, according to the seller. Photos documenting the restoration are included in the gallery.
– A partial list of notable currently installed equipment reported by the seller includes metal wheel covers, MB-Tex upholstery, a rear bench seat, and a Pioneer CD player.
– Called W113 internally, the second-generation SL made its debut at the 1963 Geneva auto show. It was related to the W111 sedan under the sheet metal, and it stood out with elegant styling that later earned it the “Pagoda” nickname. Every W113 came standard with a fuel-injected straight-6, and Mercedes-Benz relied on aluminum to reduce weight, so the W113 delivered excellent performance without sacrificing comfort and luxury. The rare “California Coupe” model offered 2+2 seating along with a removable hardtop roof. Production ended in 1971, and the W113 passed the torch to the R107.
– Power comes from a 2.8-liter straight-6, rated at about 180 horsepower and 193 lb-ft of torque. Output is sent to the rear wheels via a 4-speed automatic transmission.
